South Africa

My original intention; prior to quitting my job; was to come to South Africa to visit the friends and family I still have here and to attend a friend’s wedding.

Of course, I cannot miss out on a couple of side trips and definitively some game viewing!! The variety of animals here is breath-taking! I say this coming from the land of roos (kangaroos) and emus. The animals in Australia are all peculiar but there isn’t much variety.

I went on two game drives through Pilanesberg National Park. One was with a guide- the well known “Leopard Man” and the other was a self drive with my parents. Heinrich Neumeyer- or Leopard 1 as he is better known on the radio channels around Pilanesberg – has been studying the leopards there for many years. View his beautiful photos and videos on his Facebook page here.

The guided trip was definitely more successful- with the sighting of the BIG 5 before 9am ! The BIG 5 include rhino, buffalo, leopard, lion and elephant. This trip included a 05h30 start at the gate of the park- and had us finishing at 18h30. So it is a big day- but well worth the effort!
